THE PRO SHOT THEORY
"Good shooters are developed, not born."
Bill Sharman
Basketball Hall of Fame Player
From Sharman on Basketball Shooting

The following is an excerpt taken from Coach Hoover’s recently completed book, "PRO SHOOTING SECRETS."

In the simplest form, the body is a machine of levers and pulleys. Unlike other machines, the more you use the body correctly the better the results. No one is born a basketball player or a shooter. When an athlete first starts playing a sport, the movements are new and therefore the individual is uncoordinated. The athlete appears slow, awkward and fatigues easily. This is the cocoon stage for an athlete. As the player practices and competes more, the movements become further coordinated and the individual becomes faster as endurance improves.

I see the shot as a machine that must work in unison with five parts of the body. The five parts and their features are:
  1. The Shooting Hand—Keeps the ball straight.
  2. The Off Hand—Gives the shot a guide and overall balance.
  3. The Elbow—Supplies the shot with power
  4. Head and Shoulders—Allows the shot to be relaxed and tension free.
  5. Lower body—Responsible for overall speed and balance.

These five parts only properly work together by understanding mental concepts, which includes focusing and muscle memory. Thus, the brain (mental part) is crucial if a player wishes to understand and perfect the art of shooting.
