Basketball Doesn't Change
As players and parents, we get caught up in winning, losing, playing numerous games and always trying to reach for that elite team. Sometimes we forget what is important and what's not in the long run. What should be remembered is that we need to prepare today's youth for the next level. Unfortunately, most of today's youth along with parents get so caught up in each contest as if it's Game 7 of the NBA Championship that we fail to train and get fundamental skills. We look to the moment and forget about the big picture. Read the following and understand that basketball doesn't really change. The players and parents that understand basketball success are basically part of a committed journey. They are also usually the few individuals hat prosper in the land of hoops.

The High School Experience

An incoming freshman enters high school and goes out for basketball. The varsity coach and freshman coach see that player and judge that player.
Here's what the coaches DON'T care about. They:
DON'T care what level or what team that freshman played on in 8th grade
DON'T care how many games that freshman won in 8th grade
Don't care who coached that freshman in 8th grade

Here's what the coaches DO care about. They:
DO care if the freshman has a positive attitude and is coachable
DO care if the freshman plays hard and is aggressive
DO care if the freshman has a strong work-ethic
DO care if the freshman has FUNDAMENTAL SKILLS

The College Experience

A high school senior is playing in front of collegiate coaches. The college coaches see that player and evaluate that player.
Here's what the coaches DON'T care about. They:
DON'T care what high school team that senior is playing on
DON'T care how many games that senior's varsity team has won
DON'T care who coaches that senior's varsity team

Here's what the coaches DO care about. They:
DO care if the senior has a positive attitude and is coachable
DO care if the senior plays hard and is aggressive
DO care if the senior has a strong work-ethic
DO care if you have the senior has academic marks (SAT's and grades)
DO care if the senior has FUNDAMENTAL SKILLS

The Professional Experience

A college senior is playing in front of professional scouts. The pro scouts see that player and evaluate that player.
Here's what the scouts DON'T care about. They:
DON'T care what college team that college senior is playing on
DON'T care how many games that college senior's team has won
DON'T care who coaches that college senior's team

Here's what the coaches DO care about. They:
DO care if the college senior has a positive attitude and is coachable
DO care if the college senior plays hard and is aggressive
DO care if the college senior has FUNDAMENTAL SKILLS
